Canton Real Estate
The city of Canton holds the county seat of Cherokee County and was established in 1832. The city was incorporated under the name Etowah in 1833 then changed to Canton December 18, 1834.
Canton has a very rich heritage and rests in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The site where Canton would be founded lay in the heart of the Cherokee Nation. Many members of the Cherokee Nation moved west, but the majority stayed until removed by Federal Troops sent into the area during the summer of 1838. The remaining Cherokees were gathered and held in forts until the removal could be completed. Cherokee County had the largest of these forts located six miles east from Canton, which was called Fort Buffington. Today nothing stands to identify its timber structure, but the area is marked by a large piece of green Cherokee marble quarried near Holly Springs.
Over the years, Canton evolved from unsettled territory to a prosperous mill town known to the world over for its "Canton Denim." Though the last of the mills has long since closed, one has been transformed into a new apartment community, and the county seat still continues to thrive thanks to its family-friendly environment, becoming one of the fastest growing cities in Georgia.
Canton believes in a vision to nurture all residents, businesses, and cultural institutions by linking their resources together and providing new innovative opportunities to pursue a higher quality of life while preserving their heritage and natural resources.
One of Canton’s historic landmarks is the Canton Theater. For over 90 years, the Historic Canton Theater has been a shining star for entertainment. As early as 1911, the theater was first used to show slides and silent movies in downtown Canton. In 1994, the theater was purchased by an individual for restoration. The City of Canton acquired the property in 1997 and deeded it to the Downtown Development Authority, which insured the financing for restoration. The Canton Theater is now an elegant and grand facility brining Broadway productions to downtown Canton and the surrounding area.
Cherokee County Public Schools has 40 facilities, making it one of the fastest growing school systems in the southeast. It was one of the first school districts in the Nation to achieve “District Accreditation as a Quality School System” from Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). The SAT scores for the Class of 2008 ranked Cherokee County schools as 3rd in the state. All 5 of Cherokee County High Schools were recently recognized as “High Performing Schools”, by the Governor and State School Superintendent. All 5 High schools are in the Top 25 out of 380 schools in Georgia, ranked by the independent Georgia Policy Foundation.
