7 Ways to Give Back as a Family During the Holidays
Giving back is wonderful any time of the year, but extra special around the holidays. As we pick out wrapping paper, plan surprises for the kids and bake amazing treats, remember to dedicate some time to give as well! Not sure exactly where to start? Take a look at these 7 ways to give back to your community this holiday season!
Say Thank You
Sometimes there is nothing better than a handwritten note or card. Get your kids involved and help them write “thank-you” letters to deployed military members, caregivers or first responders. Pro Tip: Check out Operation Gratitude for an easy and great way to send thank you letters to soldiers, vets and caregivers alike.
Visit Your Local Nursing Home
Another great place to give back to this year is your local nursing home. Nursing homes often host fun activities that the whole family can participate in with the residents, making this a fun and easy way to bring holiday cheer to others.
Volunteer at an Animal Shelter
Love animals? Visit your local animal shelter to see if they could use any help. From donations to fostering to volunteering, your local animal shelter is a great family-friendly spot to give back to this holiday season.
Donate to the American Kidney Fund
Looking to do a little cleaning before family arrives this winter? Gather gently used toys and clothing that your family doesn’t use anymore and donate them to the American Kidney Fund. This is a fantastic non-profit organization that makes donating to those in need easy – they will come pick up your donations from your front porch! Learn more about how to donate and get involved here.
Collect Toys for Tots
Toys for Tots is a very special program run by the Marine Corps, which helps distribute toys to children in need during the holiday season. This program provides the opportunity for people to donate, volunteer or both! Learn more about how to get involved with Toys for Tots this holiday season here.
Give to a Food Bank
A significant amount of time during the holidays is spent cooking and baking in the kitchen. As you make delicious treats and meals for your family this season, look through your pantry for extra non-perishable food you could donate. Ask your kids to help you prepare bags full of cans, dry pasta, spices and soups this season. Feel free to call your local food bank and see if they are looking for home-cooked holiday meals as well.
Take a little time to check out the different charities and nonprofits located near you and see if they need any volunteers. Whether it’s working at a soup kitchen or helping organize clothing to donate, there are plenty of ways to get out and volunteer in your community.
These are just a few of the fun and rewarding ways to give back this holiday season – the possibilities are endless! With these ideas and suggestions, you’ll be well on your way to making a meaningful impact this holiday season. Get out there and give back!
