In this post, we’ve come up with the 7 most important things to keep in mind when house hunting for your first home:
1. Make a list of wants and needs for your first home.
Don’t forget to include the items you could live without. Make sure this list is not the end-all. Be willing to talk with your partner or even just take time to reflect on yourself about what you’d be willing to give up. Be reasonable. There are always items that you can add to your home later, but there are also various features you can never change. Make detailed notes and rank these items in descending order of importance.
2. Find a realtor you trust.
I know, I know. We’re a real estate company. Of course, we’d tell you that. But it really is so important. If you find yourself in a situation where you don’t trust your realtor, or even just don’t like him or her, find a new one. This relationship can make your home buying experience great or terrible.
3. Get a pre-approval from your lender.
Not only will this make things easier when you submit an offer letter on your dream home, but it’ll give you the satisfaction of knowing you are looking in your price range. Pre-approvals put you ahead of the competition!
4. Scope out neighborhoods and make of list of where you’d like to live and where you definitely do not.
Drive-by at different times during the day and evening to make sure it’s safe and that you’d feel at home living there. Check out the local town and schools to make sure it’s the right environment for you and your family.
5. Ask people living in the neighborhood if they like living there!
Most will tell you yes no matter how they really feel, but it’s worth a shot in case someone really doesn’t like the area. Polling people’s true thoughts is always a good idea if you want unbiased opinions.
6. Pin Away! Pinterest is a fun tool to organize your life ideas for your first home.
This includes your home! Take a break from house hunting and pin fun ways you could decorate and organize your home to ease the stress of looking at hundreds of houses online.
7. If you have the time, go to open houses.
Even if you don’t love the house it’ll give you plenty of ideas for your wants and needs list. It’ll be fun seeing some options!
And lastly, no matter what stage you are at in the buying process, relax! Buying a home is stressful enough without obsessing over every little detail. Remember that it’s easy to see the good in things if you’re looking for them. Let us help you in your real estate journey, contact us today!
