After buying a one-way ticket to Australia, James Sasson left his old life behind. He began searching for his greater purpose in life, in Rwanda. Mark Spain Real Estate strives to serve a greater purpose and lead with a servant’s heart. Our team exemplifies this in all that we do! “In 2009 I was a sales rep for a textile firm in Florida. I was trying to ‘keep up with the Joneses,’ but I wasn’t giving back. It was all about me, and I lacked purpose in my work.”
“I went to Tasmania, New Zealand all through Asia, Africa, all through India, Thailand, Singapore. I didn’t do it for the backpacking experience. It was more for me to experience the world, meet new people, and see how I could better not just my life, but also the lives of others around the world.”
“I saw a man in India who was faced down with no legs, one arm and holding a cup begging for money. It caught me by surprise and really shook me up; it put everything into perspective.”
In 2010, James returned to the United States. He discovered a problem he couldn’t ignore and needed to help solve; that problem was poverty.
James settled in Roswell, Georgia, and met his partner, Sarah Buchanan, who had spent considerable time in Africa. Both of them shared a passion for helping to end poverty, and they journeyed to Africa to find a way to do it.
After traveling to Rwanda, they listened to the needs of several local coffee farmers, many of whom saw little hope for their children. The team then decided to form the Kula Project. The organization’s mission is “to invest in the dreams and businesses of families in Rwanda by helping them grow and sell coffee.” Over 90% of these families use their income to pay school fees for their children. By helping one generation invest in themselves, the Kula Project hopes to lift up the next one.
James tries to return to Rwanda as often as he can, but he has also found a way to help others through the Mark Spain Team.
“The reason I love being a listing agent is that people invite me into their homes. They’re trying to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible, and what gets me up in the morning is helping them achieve that.”
James has taken the words of John Holmes to heart: ”There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.”
