Economy

The county started as an agricultural hub; this industry now has roughly 45,000 workers and is still growing. What’s also growing is the number of new industries populating the county: Caterpillar recently created an advanced manufacturing plant, Ethicon is building a 100,000 square foot facility, and tech startups are populating downtown Athens. This county, unlike many others, has retained its heritage while marching towards the future.

Recreation

Unlike big Athens-Clarke County folk, this County’s residents get to enjoy both nature and culture. The Georgia Museum of Art offers exhibitions from around the world, and areas like The State Botanical Garden of Georgia lets residents tune out their ringing phones and tune in to the singing birds.

Speaking of singing, no one can talk about this County without mentioning its storied music tradition. Rolling Stone named downtown Athens the number one college music town in America; it is the birthplace of the B-52’s, Widespread Panic, R.E.M., and continues to attract top-notch bands from across the country.

Schools

Athens-Clarke County high schools’s dual enrollment programs let students earn college credit from elite colleges for free, the University of Georgia to name one. Several revered private schools like  Athens Academy, St. Joseph Catholic School, and Athens Christian School are also in the area; many dominate the National Merit Scholarship Program.
