Douglas County History
The county seat is located in Douglasville, which has its own story of dispute as the courthouse commissioners began to build the courthouse in Douglasville prior to the final approval of the location. Much of the debate over this location had to do with where the Georgia Western Railroad would be coming through the county, which eventually allowed the location in Douglasville to be the perfect place for the county seat.
Even the founding name of Douglas County went under some scrutiny. The county was formed in 1870 during the Reconstruction after the Civil War and the county was originally named after Frederick Douglass who was a Civil War-era abolitionist. After some thought by the county commissioners, the second “s” was dropped and the county was then marked as being named after Stephen A. Douglas who had been an Illinois Senator and the opponent to Abraham Lincoln.

Although most of Douglas County is part of the Appalachian Mountains, there are no actual peaks in Douglas County, but the county is made up of a range of ridges, hills and valleys, making the views picturesque and serene. Adding to the views is the Chattahoochee River which borders Douglas County on the east and southeast while other bodies of water are found throughout the county.
