Fayette County has an interesting history. As one of the youngest counties in the area, established in 1821, Fayette County was named for Marquis de Lafayette who was a French war hero in the American Revolutionary War. Even though Peachtree City is the largest city in the area and was originally the only planned community the county seat is Fayetteville.

Although much of the Civil Rights movements of the 1960’s helped progress voting and rights for minorities, Fayette County had continued to hold onto its long time voting process of having an at-large election in the county, which prevented many minorities from holding government seats. This changed in 2013 after suit was filed by the NAACP in 2011 and Fayette County has become a much more diverse county with regards to its elected officials.
