Rockdale is one of the smallest counties in Georgia. It has a population under 86,000 people and an area of only 132 square miles. History

Rockdale County has an interesting story to tell and is a fantastic place to call home. Established in 1870, Rockdale County had and still has only one incorporated city, Conyers. Conyers is the county seat, therefore, it remains the most central area in the county for business and governmental functions. Because it is located within easy driving distance from Atlanta, Rockdale County makes it enjoyable for residents to experience a peaceful lifestyle of the small county as well as take advantage of the opportunities in Atlanta.

During the American Civil War, as General Sherman was laying waste to the major cities of the South, especially to Atlanta. The residents of Conyers feared their town would be next, causing many of them to flee to nearby counties for safety. General Sherman left Conyers alone though, because it was an important railroad hub along the route Sherman needed. This left Rockdale County as a great place to see some of the prewar architecture which is no longer visible in many other areas of the South.

Recreation

For residents who have visitors coming to join them in Rockdale County, there are plenty of fun attractions to see and enjoy. These attractions include several parks, campgrounds, and historical sites. Some of the most popular include the Georgia International Horse Park, Black Shoals Lake, and Covered Bridge. Additionally, Old Towne Conyers Historic District, Monastery of the Holy Spirit, Salem Campground, Smyrna Campground, Milstead Historic Mill Village, Panola Mountain State Park and the Rockdale Baptist Church are great historical attractions in Rockdale.

As one of the only places with historic sites from prewar left, Rockdale County offers a great historic tour for residents and visitors alike. In this small county, there are multiple locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
